Grades ServedThe Shire School currently serves children in grades Kindergarten through fourth. We have two classes. One class is a multi-age class of approximately 6 students who are all learning a typical curriculum for their grade. They receive individual instruction with a slower, multi-sensory approach but are on grade level academically. Our second class of four students is a mixed grade class but has an emphasis on speech and language. This "language intensive" classroom is rich in music, movement, visual supports and high interest subjects. Students are verbal but need help becoming fluent or conversational. Reading, comprehension and expressive language are the focus of this class. The Shire School believes that children with learning and processing disabilities have a wide range of strengths and weaknesses that result in varying skills that do not always fit into typical grade classifications. For this reason our classes are a mix of ages and grades with the students grouped more by learning and social ability than actual age. The long term plan is to grow with the current students until 6th grade; adding one class each year until a student body of approximately 25 children is reached.
